Hoʻokumu: A Celebration of Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi

E hele mai — join us Saturday, February 28th from 9am to 3pm for Ho‘okumu: A Celebration of Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, a complimentary community event honoring Hawaiian Language Month at Fairmont Kea Lani.

The day begins with storytelling on the history and significance of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, led by Kahu Kili, nā kumu, and students of Pūnana Leo o Maui, with hula performances by Kula Kaiapuni o Kalama and a special presentation by Kumu Kīʻope Raymond. Enjoy interactive cultural activities, a fashion presentation and designer pop-up shops featuring Wailani Artates of Only Aloha Here, local vendors including Makahulima, Uhiwai ʻo Haleakalā and more, plus live music by Maui’s own Kaniala Masoe.

Hoʻokumu means to create, originate, commence and establish.

This interactive activity offers a fun and engaging way for young guests to connect with the cultural tradition while celebrating the spirit of the performance in a safe, playful setting.

Join us for an engaging shoreline experience for guests of all ages, discovering the living classroom just steps from the resort. Guided by our cultural team, this interactive beach exploration highlights the natural and cultural elements that make Hawaiʻi’s coast so special. Along the way, you will learn about native plants such as the naupaka and its traditional uses, observe the ʻōpihi that cling to the rocks, and safely interact with marine life including sea urchins like the wana (pencil urchin) and uni. The experience continues with an introduction to the waʻa (Hawaiian canoe), where we share its parts, history, and importance in daily life across the islands. Blending hands-on discovery with storytelling, this experience offers a deeper appreciation for the connection between ocean, land, and culture.
